Obsidian Frontmatter Generator

Hand-written Properties are easy to mistype — missing quotes, the wrongtags key, or a list that is not valid YAML. Paste a JSON object or a JavaScript expression and copy Obsidian-ready frontmatter. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

or drop a file onto the input area below

Template

JSON is safest. JavaScript can use file.basename,file.parent.path, and file.tags.

Output

YAML arrays

Paste JSON or a JavaScript object. YAML updates as you type.

YAML frontmatter

Copy this to the top of an Obsidian note.

How to generate Obsidian frontmatter

  1. Paste a JSON object, or switch to JavaScript for a plugin-style template.
  2. If you use file.basename, file.parent.path, or file.tags, fill in Note context.
  3. YAML updates as you type. Canonical keys maptag → tags, alias → aliases, andcssclass → cssclasses.
  4. Click Copy YAML or Download .mdand paste the block at the top of the note.

Why generate Properties this way?

Obsidian plugins can evaluate a JSON or JavaScript template against the current file on save. You do not need that plugin for a one-off note. This page runs the same kind of template in the browser, with folder, title, and tags that you type instead of reading the vault.

JSON is the default because it cannot run code. JavaScript is for templates like{ title: file.basename, folder: file.parent.path }.

Notes

  • The template must be an object. Arrays and primitives are rejected.
  • JavaScript is an expression that returns an object. It runs in this page only. There is no dv Dataview API, Zod, or access to other notes.
  • # prefixes are stripped from tags values because Properties store recipe, not#recipe.
  • Does not write to your vault or run on save.
  • Template text is limited to 1 MB.
  • Copy to clipboard requires a secure connection (HTTPS) and browser permission.
